IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE: THE ABCUSD HONOR BAND CONCERT WILL TAKE PLACE AT WHITNEY HIGH SCHOOL THIS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH BEGINNING AT 5:00PM. STUDENT CALL TIME IS 4:30PM.
Please make sure you read this update carefully so you’re well prepared. The 2nd Donation for JV Guard, Varsity Guard, and Winter Drumline is due tomorrow 2/6. STUDENTS MUST BE CAUGHT UP TO RECEIVE ANY NEW COSTUMES. Our last Honor Band rehearsal is tomorrow 2/6 from 6-8:30PM (please arrive at least 20-30 minutes early to set up and warm up). The ABCUSD Honor Band Concert is Tuesday 2/7 at 5:00PM. We have a Chipotle Fundraiser Night on Wednesday 2/8 from 4-8PM at the Los Cerritos Mall. The Jazz Band will be performing at Gahr’s Open House & Future Freshmen Night on Thursday 2/9 at 5:45PM in the gym. Due to Open House, the Varsity Guard will rehearse on Thursday from 6th period until 5PM, and the JV Guard will rehearse on Friday from 6th period until 5PM. The deadline to purchase a SAX-Y GRAM is this Friday 2/10! Friday is also the deadline for the $150 for the Varsity Guard San Diego Trip.
Congratulations to the JV Winter Guard on their FIRST EVER performance at the El Toro Classification Show yesterday! Thank you to the JV parents who helped by carpooling, taking the floor/equipment, and a special thanks to our Varsity parents who helped too. For many of our upcoming shows, both guards will be competing – often with the JV performing hours before the Varsity. While we were able to rely on some of our Varsity parents for this first competition, the JV Guard will need to be completely self-sufficient with a group of JV parents to run the carpool and take the JV floor/equipment, otherwise they will not be able to perform. These are growing pains from having two guards; but it’s a great problem to have!
We would like to thank Mr. De Freitas, Mr. Barcelos, Mr. Goncalves, and Mr. Silva for doing an incredible job yesterday building and painting props for the drumline and guard. This is going to help our instructors and students bring their show concepts to life! This Saturday 2/11, the Winter Drumline has their first SCPA competition at La Quinta HS, and both the JV and Varsity Guards will be performing at the Chino Hills Preview Show! We will need parent help for all THREE groups, so please come out and support!! ABCUSD HONOR BAND CONCERT 2/7 AT 5:00PM
Please join us this Tuesday, February 7th at 5:00 p.m. for the ABCUSD Honor Band Concert in the Grace Hu Auditorium at Whitney High School! The Honor Band represents the best student musicians from all of the middle schools and high schools in ABCUSD. Admission is FREE! VARSITY WINTER GUARD SAN DIEGO TRIP 2/25-26!
We’re excited to be traveling February 25-26th to the Winter Guard International (WGI) San Diego Regional competition! This is an overnight trip and will cost $150 per student — due and paid in full THIS FRIDAY, February 10th. We accept cash, checks made payable to “Gahr Band Boosters,” or you can click here to pay online. This covers lodging for one night, as well as meals throughout the weekend — including a pizza restaurant dinner Saturday evening (pending performance times) and breakfast at the hotel Sunday morning. Students are still welcome to bring additional money for food and snacks at the competition site. Click here to download the itinerary. We will not have the times solidified until approximately two weeks before the competition.
The students will be staying at The Hilton Garden Inn (about 4 miles from the competition site). If this is your first overnight trip, please know that it is standard to have students stay four to a room, typically with two queen-sized beds. Based on our current numbers, however, we will have some rooms with only three students. Students in rooms of three will not pay any additional cost. Students can select who they would like to have in their room and we will do our best to accommodate their requests if possible.
As with all trips for the Gahr Instrumental Music Program, students must stay in the hotel with other students. A block of rooms has already been reserved and we are able to keep the trip cost low based on the students staying together. If you are a parent interested in staying at the same hotel, please contact Dee Dee Varney at dvarney15@gmail.com no later than Friday, February 10th and she can help you get a room.
We ask that students stay together as a group for the entire weekend – traveling to/from San Diego, the competition, meals offsite, etc. It is great that a number of parents and families will be coming to support, but we ask that you please do not pull your child away from the rest of the group. Your child will make friendships and memories that will last a lifetime!

We are asking for all students to carpool with the same students that will be in their hotel room – one room per vehicle. There are many times throughout the weekend that we will be traveling – to and from the hotel to the show site, to dinner, back to the hotel, etc. This will help to make sure no one is left behind (and also that the students are not walking around alone). This is also another chance for students to bond and have fun on the trip. We are looking forward to a fun trip and to celebrating all the hard work of our first ever Varsity Winter Guard!
